Cowboy Phil came into our lives ten years ago. My husband and I started riding horses in the summer in the mountains of North Carolina. Phil helped Tip, my husband, learn so much and gain so much confidence with horses, and the three of us traveled to beautiful spots to ride and picnic. We called it Fridays with Phil and it was always a wonderful adventure. He used time to train the horses as we went. They planned a wonderful expo on one of these rides and put it on for two years in Jacksonville. We had top clinicians and demos and everyone had a great time.
For fun and to improve Tip's seat they spent a couple of lessons in a round pen, bareback with a toy cap pistol firing it as Tip rode. They wanted to get Tip's horse, Cade, used to the gunfire, but it was the bareback that helped so much and Tip loved the lessons.
Tip's horse was a young Rocky Mountain and Phil easily taught him to pull a cart and then they each would drive small meadowbrook carts and I would see them flashing through the woods on the logging trails, Tip driving his horse, and Phil driving my spotted pony. Later when Tip became ill with ALS, Phil taught Cade to pull the big therapeutic cart with the wheelchair lift. And together he and Phil created a ski rope type handle so Tip could continue to drive with one hand when he lost strength in the other. They did a wonderful demo for a Wounded Warriors fundraiser which Tip so enjoyed.
Even as Tip lost strength due to his illness, the trail riding adventures continued. Phil would figure mounting options and design our trips to match with what Tip was able to do. Phil's love of horses and patience with teaching enabled Tip to enjoy this wonderful part of his life so long.
Even though we have lost my husband and our friend, Phil and I continue to look for beautiful trail adventures. And I look forward to finding and starting a new young horse with Phil in the near future. He has a gift with horses and truly enjoys his work. Sincerely, Diane Graham
